FCC Agrees with NTIA's 10x10 Broadband Channel Suggestion

The FCC released an Order on Reconsideration yesterday agreeing to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration's (NTIA) recommendation that the FCC reconsider the aspect of its order which allows agencies to operate on broadband services under special temporary authority (STA).  NTIA officials sent a letter to Chairman Julius Genachowski suggesting the FCC examine the possibility of authorizing 10x10 Mhz allocations for Public Safety under this order.

Interoperability, system lifecycle, performance, and cost were considerations that caused the NTIA to make this recommendation, instead of the 5x5 MHz allocations currently in the order.

This recommendation is an attempt to spare Public Safety agencies the impending headache and cost of switching to the would-be available 10x10 channels from the 5x5 the Commission is allowing.

Industry authorities have stated the 10x10 MHz has enough of a buffer to mitigate any interoperable issues, and the value of resolving any 10x10 MHz issues early on could be great depending on the funding climate and system design issues FirstNet is presented with.
