Harris launched an LTE demonstration network on Super Bowl Sunday, allowing members of the New Orleans' emergency operations center to access live streaming video from individuals in the field, with Harris tablets ruggedized and designed for operation over LTE.
The pilot program allows the city to test its mission-specific Public Safety LTE devices and applications, and it will help first responders take advantage of Broadband technology. The program operates under a special temporary authority (STA) from the FCC to operate in the 700 MHz band 14, with permission from FirstNet.
Harris, Cisco, and Nokia Siemens Networks will work with New Orleans throughout the six month demo to test additional applications and devices specific to Public Safety. This multi-vendor environment is a great test-bed for Public Safety LTE Broadband applications and devices, including the recently introduced InTouch handheld devices, BeOn push-to-talk applications and vehicular modems from Harris. The packet core and eNodeB base stations were provided by Cisco and Nokia, respectively.
