AT&T Wireless, Verizon Wireless, Sprint Nextel, and T-Mobile USA have all agreed to begin text-to-911 services no later than May 15, 2014, in accordance with an agreement with the National Emergency Number Association and Association for Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International.
The 6,000 9-1-1 centers in the country must make a request for service, with the four major wireless carriers agreeing to meet the requests within six months. As new methods of communication become standard for consumers (specifically those non-voice methods), PSAPs are working to meet the demands of their constituents. This agreement is a great step forward for the safety and security of all citizens, especially those witth speech and hearing disabilities who are unable to talk to operators in an emergency situation.
