House Oversight Committee Investigates LightSquared

The House Energy & Commerce Committee's Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee held a hearing on the LightSquared issue last Friday.

The purpose was to "examined the process and decision-making leading up to the FCC's grant of a conditional waiver to LightSquared on January 26, 2011."

According to opening comments prepared by Chairman Cliff Stearns, the main questions being posed relate to how effective and appropriate the FCC's process was and whether or not the GPS companies should have raised concerns about interference earlier.  It also examined whether interference issues will continue to be a problem as providers expand broadband networks.

The President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology recently released a report stating that unless receiver-driven interference issues are resolved soon, this type of problem will rear its ugly head again and again with the growing demand for Broadband spectrum.

FCC officials were not present for the hearing.
