FCC Advises Radio Shops Not to Program Pre-Narrowbanding Channel Widths

The largest organization of Motorola service shops sought guidance from the FCC on whether their technicians should fulfill customer requests to program radios with pre-narrowbanding channel widths or to refuse this type of service.

The narrowbanding mandate ordered all operators on UHF channels to move to 12.5 kHz bandwidth from the wideband 25kHz standard by Jan. 1, 2013.  Unlesss the agency has obtained a waiver of the rules from the FCC, operating on the higher bandwidth is in violation of this mandate, and non-compliant agencies may face enforcement actions.

The USMSS received advice from the FCC this week guiding shops not to program non-compliant frequencies, however this may cause problems for many businesses whose customers may seek services from a competitor who is willing to program the non-compliant frequencies.

"Not everybody plays by the same rules.  If they're in this business, certainly there is a set of rules we should follow, but unfortunately, not everybody does," said USMSS Executive Director Bill Dow, quoted by Urgent Communications.

For further information on the Narrowbanding mandate and how the FCC will deal with noncompliance, read the Urgent Communications article on the Commission's strategies for identifying violators.
