Narrowbanding Waivers are Rolling into the PSHSB

Those of you who subscribe to the FCC's Daily Digest may notice more and more Public Notices seeking comment on requests for waiver of 47 C.F.R. § 90.209(b), the January 1, 2013 deadline for narrowbanding VHF and UHF systems, most recently that of the New York City Transit Authority.

Although the Commission recently approved a waiver of the deadline for UHF T-Band frequencies (due to HR3630 mandating that they be released for auction), many agencies are still scrambling to comply with the narrowbanding mandate's quickly approaching deadline.

NYCTA purchased approximately 15,000 narrowband capable radios in 2003 for its subway radio system, however procurement issues have held up its narrowband transition, so it is requesting a 42-month extension to replace and reprogram its base stations and related site equipment in the subway.

Agencies seeking waiver of the rules must be sure to follow proper guidelines as described in
47 C.F.R. §1.925 (submission guidelines) and Public Notices DA 11-1189 (content of waiver request) and 12-246 (guidance on seeking narrowbanding waivers).
